A herpes virus that results in cold sores or fever blisters on the mouth or genital area. These usually heal themselves in time, however, in persons with AIDS, these virus sores require intervention with drugs to heal. Like all herpes viruses, the virus may lie dormant for months or years in nerve or lymph tissue and flare up again under stress, trauma, infection, or immunosup-pression. There are no present cures for any of the herpes viruses.
